440,000 Patients Die Annually From Hospital Errors

April 17, 2014 | Category: News

Consumer Reports Magazine reports in its May 2014 issue that according to a study published in the Journal of Patient Safety, approximately 440,000 patients die each year after suffering an error in a hospital in the US. The study's author, John James, Ph.D., points out that this means more than 1,000 people die each day because of hospital errors, which means more than half of all the deaths occurring in hospitals are because of medical malpractice. Consumer Reports also points to a study by the United States Department of Health and Human Services finding that 180,000 patients die in part because of their hospital care - - - and, that study was limited to Medicare patients!

The bottom line is that hundreds of thousands of people die each year because of errors in hospitals. If you have a family member who has suffered a catastrophic injury or death caused by a medical error, Swartz & Reed may be able to help.
